Current Fields and Trends in Psychology: Empowering the 21st Century Filipino Psychologists (A Seminar)

At exactly 10:00 in the morning, the Rizal Hall’s door opened and welcomed Psychology students to witness and be involved in Psych4A’s seminar. This seminar is a part of the block’s final output in the subject “Current Issues in Psychology” led by Prof. Mardy E. Dizon (course professor). A total of 80 Psychology students gathered not counting 5 professors who attended (Prof. Mardy Dizon, Prof. Gerald Santos, Prof. Urbano Casamina, Prof. Jennifer Reyes and a professor from College of Business) and 24 fourth year psychology students who organized the seminar.

The masters of ceremony that led the audiences to the seminar from start to finish are Khimmy Magno and Peter- Paul Callado. The program formally started with a Lasallian prayer.

After the Lasallian prayer, everyone was invited to stand up, give respect, and sing the national anthem Lupang Hinirang. Then Ms. Jennifer Reyes (DLSAU HRD) gave her warm message to psychology students, and also introduced everyone to the seminar that any learning in this seminar will be of everyone’s benefit when faced in a more competitive world of professionals.

Everyone paid their attention as the speaker finally introduced. Ms. Graciel Aguila Lintag was invited as the guest speaker for the day, the Deputy Management Representative in Far Eastern University. Ms. Graciel worked for so many years in different areas related to psychology, became an editor in different publications, engaged in different activities and services, and awarded different recognition.

The seminar proper started with an introductory question from the speaker asking different psychology students as to why they chose the program “PSYCHOLOGY” as their major. Two students were given a chance to tell everyone their reasons.

The speaker appreciated the students effort in sharing their thoughts. Finally, everyone had a chance to learn the content of the seminar.

Summary of the Seminar:

Things continuously change in the past centuries and Filipino Psychologists also continuously evolve. We are now on the 21^st century and psychologists of today should have these characteristics. First is skeptical, in which we are not contented with only one evidence but we rather find other evidences that might prove what we are trying to prove. Being skeptical allows us to be open-minded where we are able to listen to other people’s ideas and also respect their opinions. Second is self-aware and emotionally stable, where we should be able to manage our own emotions and we should be aware of our actions. Third is tolerance, which means being patient towards people who have different opinions and views. Fourth is ethical, in a way that we should be aware of the accepted standards in psychology, what should be kept confidential. And lastly, 21^st century psychologists should be generous in terms of sharing knowledgeable information. But we still have to keep confidential issues at their places. We should be generous but in a way that we are still moral.

If there are characteristics that psychologists of the 21^st century should be able to have, there are also these fields in which we can apply our interests: Industrial psychology which involves organizational works; Counseling psychology, involves clinical psychology and guidance counseling; School psychology which involves works in academic field particularly teacher or sped teacher in which teachers should be able to identify the needs of the students; Psychometric and Assessment; Sports Psychology; Forensic Psychology which involves crime cases; Media Psychology; Evolutionary Psychology; Positive Psychology; Engineering Psychology which involves curiosity about what should be or should not be in a place or room; and Cross Cultural Psychology. There are also issues in psychology that we can do studies with like Gender studies, Women studies, Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies, Peace studies, and  the Philippine Psychology Act of 2010.

OPEN FORUM: The participants are enthusiastic and eager to learn more. They were given a chance to speak out their minds regarding the seminar, their queries and clarifications. Of course those who asked questions received tumblers as a token.

Before the closing proper of the seminar, Prof. Urbano Casamina presented and awarded Prof. Mardy Dizon a certificate of appreciation for leading Psychology 4A in organizing the event. Then Prof. Mardy Dizon did the honor in presenting the guest speaker an award of appreciation for imparting her knowledge to psychology students of De La Salle Araneta University.

After everyone has settled, Prof Mardy Dizon gave his closing remarks, thanking everyone for their active participation and presence and recognizing Psychology 4A for their cooperation in organizing the event.

All participants were awarded certificates as the seminar closed.

Yahoo! I finally got my album! (OWL CITY's The Midsummer Station album launch. Philippines Edition @ Astroplus, SM North Edsa)

can you find me? I'm holding my prize

Pinoy Owls flew all the way to Astroplus, SM City the Block to gather and once more, celebrate an event for an album launch of Owl City's The Midsummer Station. Owl City Philippines (Owl City PH) is an official fan-base for owl city fans. August 25, 2012 (Saturday) was the schedule for this event. And I marked my calendar for this (doing countdowns for myself).

Unfortunately, two important tasks were scheduled on that day. The final dry-run for our PSYCH RAISE in our organization called Psychology Society (PsySoc) and this album launch. Guess what, I went first to this album launch before doing my responsibility as the president of the organization. Hihihi.

And so, the album selling began at exactly 10:00 am and the program started at 2:30 pm gathering all pinoy owls for games and prizes. Luckily, I got one prize (a poster I don't know what size it is but I think it's an A4). After the event, all owls danced to the beat of "Good Time."

(Exhibit 1) The album costs 459 pesos. Of course what's the launch for if there weren't any freebies? The album comes with (Exhibit 2) freebies that Owls will surely love! Freebies contain photo-cards, a dogtag and a poster (huge poster). Of course they will let you choose what type of freebie you want. :)

And as what I've said a while ago, I won a prize. And the (Exhibit 3) prize that I got is an A4 poster (I guess, I'm not so sure about the size). Got it after they picked a number from the registration list (I think I am on number 45.)

I really had fun during the launch even though my tummy is not feeling well. That's why, If you will watch the following video, I wasn't dancing.

I bought "European Dream Homes" book at an affordable (really cheap) price.

Almost one week of class suspension and there's nothing to do at home. Yesterday I decided to visit a bookstore (Ok it's National Bookstore) just to buy some school stuff such as glue ('coz I realize we don't have stock of glue), a pencil case (my old pencil case is rugged) and etc.

Strollin' around the bookstore, I saw a 'SALE' sign then said to myself; "Oops, Sale!" I tried to grab some books just for fun of it then saw this book entitled "European Dream Homes" oh oh. One of my dreams is to become an architect someday unfortunately, when I already shifted my course from BS Accountancy into AB Psychology, I forgot to think about this course. But anyway, I saw this book and it's really dense and thick. The pages are thick also.

I really love how the book looks. The book contains 200 French. English and Mediterranean house designs. More specifically; Homes with French Flair, French cottages, Homes in the English Tradition, English cottages, Designs from the Mediterranean and Grand European manors.

The fun part of the book is that it contains also tons of pages of exterior house designs from different styles and blue prints. Awesome eh?

Nestlé Philippines Celebrates 100 years (a TV Commercial entitled "Pag-ibig")

Nestle celebrated its centennial year in the country through the theme “Kasambuhay, Habambuhay.” It was on 2011 when the TV commercial aired nationwide. The TV commercial is entitled “Pag-ibig” (theme song by APO Hiking Society). Even though the commercial’s length is short, still it’s striking for me.

The commercial is a masterpiece depicting Filipino traits and traditions. As years passed, everything evolved including the Filipino television. Programs seemed to become more liberated and commercials became nonsense, some has subliminal messages (that’s not good for minor viewers). But then, this commercial pops out just like that in the midst of overflowing TV commercials.

This commercial gives a lot of messages to the viewers especially on love for family which makes the cultural traits of each Filipino. There are two characters (that was focused) on the commercial, a girl and a boy who met each other since they’re both kids. And as time pass by, both of them grew so as their relationship together. The commercial title may seem to refer on love for opposite sex but if you try to watch and understand the whole story; it also refers to the love for family which I found so striking. Since Filipino people are family-oriented, it’s a good point how Nestle (knowing that it’s an international brand) made their product relate to Filipino culture. The commercial actually touched my heart especially on the part when two lovers grew old but then they are still taking care of one another, a value that everyone must acquire. There’s also this part when the couple got married and had their own family, when they were about to sleep, the wife had their children with her on bed rather than her husband who was on the floor beside the bed. Before they turned the lights off, the couple held each other’s hand, which I found heartwarming.

Family was depicted as an important tool for growth in the commercial. That we should value and love each other no matter what happens through misery and happiness. I adore how the family in the commercial is bonded with each other. I personally love my own family and so while watching the commercial, I found myself relating to it. I also noticed that the commercial is manifesting another Filipino trait, the extended family tradition. On the last part, all of them were united up to the grandsons and granddaughters of the couple.

The commercial started when the boy first met the girl while she was wearing her new dress, then the girl teased her because he has milk traces on his lips and as the commercial ended, the boy is now old, he have his granddaughter. When he first saw his granddaughter, the girl is wearing a new dress, impressing her grandmother (the wife) then she teased her grandfather because he has tear marks on his eyes.

Its amazing how nestle tried to connect the commercial to their products. That nestle products became the part of every Filipino family through generations in constant companions. Just like what two lovers became, from childhood up to their old age.

Two of my photography works are published on TINIG's EKLIPSE 12

I don't recall when I submitted my photo through email to TINIG's email address. But then, I was surprised to see two of my works on their latest published EKLIPSE. EKLIPSE is a collection of artworks and so, I'm an artist! LOL. Kidding aside, I actually do not expect my entries to be published.

TINIG is an official student publication of De La Salle Araneta University. It was my friend who told me that she found my photos on EKLIPSE and so, I asked to see her copy and there, I saw my works. Surprisingly, when I submitted my works, I didn't put any title on it but then the TINIG (or I mean people behind TINIG) made the titles. The first picture (which you see on the left side) is entitled "Strained Bonds" the other one is "Sentido Colonial." You know the feeling when you saw your name? I dunno. LOL. The photos are on page 27 and 28 of the booklet.

OK to tell you secretly, I personally doesn't like those photos (shhh). When TINIG emailed me back (before the publication), I gave them another two of my works. But then I'm happy because TINIG published two of my entries.
