Last January 15, 2011 Hyundai held a Mini Olympics at De La Salle Araneta University. This program aims to develop good relationships between Korean and Filipinos and also build awareness between two cultures.
The volunteers were 60 Korean students and 15 Filipino students, of course, I’m one of the Filipino volunteers. There were also 450+ out of school children beneficiaries in a minor age.
Actually, Hyundai’s “Happy Move - Moving the world forward” program was held in 12 days. Korean volunteers made houses for those less fortunate and repaint walls and fix bathrooms. These were their missions here in the Philippines.
At first, I thought that the upcoming event was just an ordinary one, but we (my classmates and I) were shocked because the event was not local but it was international.
Before the mini olympics happened, we were grouped accordingly. In each group there were 6-7 (i think) Koreans and 1-2 Filipino students.
After we were grouped, all of us fixed the things that we will be needed and built a big tent. I was grouped in the color IVORY.
We also decorated our own tents and in my group, we made balloons and I was happy because one of my Korean groupmate, Song, taught me how to twist a balloon.
Then the kids finally arrived, 450 kids were divided according to the total of our group then were grouped with us. These kids will play the obstacles. Before the Olympics, Koreans face painted the kids.
Before the Mini Olympics started, we had our lunch with the kids. Then the Mini Olympics started! All of us were so happy especially the kids. In each tents, there were lot of obstacles and in ours, we had jumping ropes. The day was hot and the sun was up, we were all tired but still continued to finish our duty.
After the event ended, Koreans offered to us their dance numbers and danced with Korean pop songs. Of course, the kid beneficiaries also offered their own number and danced some folk dances here in the Philippines.
After the dance number, we rested for a while then a new game began. This game used a big ball then what we will do was to hit it going backwards then should return it back immediately.
The Olympics ended and it gave us a lot of fun and an unforgettable experience.
After the kids (beneficiaries) left De La Salle Araneta University, Ms. Heo, Hyundai Korea Manager talked to the Filipino students to join them with their dinner party. We agreed and joined the dinner. We rode in a bus then went to a restaurant.
There, the Koreans thanked and gave backpacks to us for their gratitude.
We, the Filipinos, were so happy because of the opportunity given to us. And I think, this will become one of the highlights in my life and also, I hope, this will happen again…
These were the Filipino Volunteers…
